NewJeans Minji Impresses With Japanese Speaking Skills

In SNS and online communities, NewJeans Minji is drawing attention from netters and K-pop fans for her being fluent in 3 foreign languages.

On September 14, the global group NewJeans appeared on the music program, "NHK MUSIC EXPO 2023."

After the program, an undisclosed video was posted on the social network service channel "NHK MUSIC," and Minji became a hot topic for naturally talking Japanese with the Japanese cast without a script.

The person Minji talked to was SUZUKA, the main vocalist of the Japanese unit Atarashii Gakko. The latter smiled and greeted the K-pop idol while standing next to the group during the filming.

Suzuka then said in Japanese:

"How many hours did it take to get to Japan? By plane?"

"It takes about two hours."

Suzuka asked pleasantly'

"Doesn't your butt hurt?"

Minji understood the joke and burst into laughter by answering in a foreign language, saying:

"It doesn't hurt."

Minji also continued the perfect conversation in Japanese, praising the Atarashii Gakko leader for her coolness and sharing that she also did nail art in Japan.

Those who were listening to her admired her on-point Japanese accent and pronunciation and said:

"Your Japanese is good."

However, Minji maintained a humble attitude and lowered her head, saying:

"Don't mention it. I'm actually studying."

Suzuka delighted Minji by saying:

NewJeans Minji Praised for Being Fluent in 3 Languages

Following the videos that circulated on short-form video-sharing platforms like TikTok, Minji's knowledge of various languages gained attention from fans again.

In particular, while Minji was born Korean, the female star has competent English-speaking skills. She mostly learned by studying under the rigorous Korean curriculum since she was in elementary, and she was able to practice it more after studying in Canada for a few months.

Later on, she was able to use English and improve it by communicating with her co-members Danielle and Hanni who both grew up in Australia.

In interviews, Minji was always lauded for her beautiful English accent and diction that matched her top-tier visuals as well.

Being able to speak two languages is impressive enough, but the "OMG" singer has also a strong grasp of Japanese. Upon digging, Minji is known to have tried to obtain the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N2, which is the second highest grade in the JLPT test.
