Jennifer Lopez To Star In ‘The 33’ Alongside Antonio Banderas, Martin Sheen: Movie Based On Chilean Mine Accident Of 2010

Jennifer Lopez will star in a film about the tragic Chilean mining disaster, "The 33," alongside Antonio Banderas, the Hollywood Reporter revealed.

Lopez has been confirmed for a role in "The 33," which will be produced by Mike Medavoy.

The film is based on the true story of 33 Chilean miners who were trapped underground for 69 days in 2010 before being rescued.

"The 33" will be Lopez's first major film role since starring in this year's "Parker" with Jason Statham.

In addition to Lopez and Banderas, Martin Sheen and Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro will star in the movie.

Patricia Riggen will direct the film, and the screenplay will be written by Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera.

Ed McGurn is also producing the film. Carlos Eugenio Lavin and Leopoldo Enriquez will executive produce.

Production is scheduled to start this fall in Chile.

In 2010, the remarkable rescue of the miners from the San Jose mine made headlines all over the world and captured the attention of producer Mike Medavoy, who bought the rights to a film adaptation.

The miners were trapped a half a mile below the Earth's surface for over two months.

In the film adaptation of the disaster and rescue, Antonio Banderas will reportedly play Mario Sepulveda, a charismatic miner nicknamed "Super Mario." Sheen will play a miner's father, and Santoro will play a trapped miner.

There is no word yet on which role Lopez will play.

Jennifer Lopez recently revealed that she would not be returning to American Idol as a judge for the reality show's next season.
