Playstation 4 Release Date Rumors: Sony Loses 2 Million Sales In PSP, Vita Handheld Devices

As release date rumors, prices and specs of the Playstation 4 continue to engulf the minds of gamers around the world, the PS4's developer is trying to shore up efforts to revive its handheld gaming products.

Sony forecasted a combined total of just five million Vita and PSP sales for May 2013 to April 2014, two million less than reported for the business year ended last April, the Computer and Video Games news blog reports.

Sony initially projected 16 million sales last year and only made 7 million sales on the VITA and PSP, Computer and Video Games also reports.

"[Vita] is a very worthy and better successor to PSP. Where it's been difficult has been proving the companion status for PlayStation 3. The fact is it was developed for PS4, much more than PS3," Sony Computer Entertainment UK managing director Fergal Gara told the news blog.

"The number of things we could demonstrate and prove was limited - there's been some good examples - but now we go into the PS4 era, that companion device will look far more clear. We're optimistic it's got a lot more legs left in it and the PS4 has given it a shot in the arm."

Sony intends on making games slated to be released on the PS4 available on the Playstation Vita utilizing Remote Play functionality.

Sony officials also say the PS4's release, price and specs will help boost sales of the Playstation Vita. But the PSP might be facing the backburner of Sony products.
