Lucas is reportedly making his solo debut, but the reception regarding the idol's upcoming endeavor was instead met with waves of negative and sarcastic reactions from netizens.
Here's what happened.
NCT Lucas to Make Solo Debut in April, But K-pop Fans Have Mixed Reactions
On March 8, Korean news outlet JTBC News reported that Lucas would be making his solo debut in April, according to the claims of industry insiders.
The report immediately gained the attention of agency SM Entertainment, which confirmed Lucas' upcoming solo debut. The company also stated that Lucas' schedule would be announced soon on a separate date.
"Lucas is preparing for his solo activities in April," SM shared. "The details for his schedules would be revealed later."
On the same day (March 7), netizens established an online post to express their disdain towards Lucas' solo debut and stated how the upcoming activity would only be a waste of money.
Read their reactions here:
- "No but f**k, what a waste of money. Let's invest it in your existing singers instead."
- "Not him, give my bias their solo instead."
- "Why is SM flopping? This is f**king harmful."
- "That's why everyone is leaving SM."
- "SM can't even get their artists to renew and is even releasing an album for him."
- "He's only doing this because there's still demand right?"
- "Just why is SM doing this?"
International fans were also frustrated with SM's decision to give Lucas a solo debut. Some even mentioned that SM should focus on its other existing idols instead, while others gave suggestions about where the agency should promote Lucas.
- "FFS why him of all people? There are so many perfectly good NCT members they could debut solo instead."
- "Just bring Seunghan back this is ridiculous."
- "We don't want this."
- "Give Joy a proper solo instead."
- "It's honestly impressive how he keeps managing to fail upwards."
- "Even if there was NO controversy he still wouldn't deserve a solo lmao."
- "Wow, they really didn't let him go."
- "So he will continue his career in Korea or where actually?"
- "If SM is eager to make him come back, they should market him in Thailand. China won't take him and I don't think he has the demand in Korea. SEA is his only way lol."
- "All I know is C and K fans are not gonna support him because they don't have many fans there anymore. Maybe a little bit of southeastern fans are still supporting him."
In August 2021, Lucas faced serious backlash due to accusations of gaslighting, cheating, and his overall past with his ex-girlfriends. Due to the heavy criticism, SM Entertainment officially announced the suspension of Lucas' group activities.
On May 10, 2023, Lucas parted ways from NCT and WayV. The withdrawal was followed by a remark from the company, saying that Lucas would now be promoting solo.
