Following I'LL-IT's debut with "Magnetic," Korean netizens have sparked a debate online on whether their choreography copies NewJeans and LE SSERAFIM's past work.
On March 25, 2024, I'LL-IT made their official debut with their debut mini-album, "Super Real Me," and its lead single, "Magnetic."
For those who watched "R U Next?", they have been highly anticipating the girl group's debut, and now they are actively promoting their release.
However, their choreography is being accused of copying from fellow HYBE girl groups. Keep on reading for all the details.
I'LL-IT 'Magnetic' Choreography Bears Resemblances to NewJeans, LE SSERAFIM Dances
On March 26, 2024, a post titled "I'LL-IT's choreography is said to be similar to other groups" was uploaded to a well-known South Korean online community forum.
The original poster (OP) shared several GIFs of I'LL-IT's choreography for "Magnetic" that bear similarities to other groups.
In one part, a member is seen in the center with the others behind her. As she takes the center role, the members extend their arms out, as if mimicking a firework behind her.
The original poster pointed out that this is similar to LE SSERAFIM's choreography for the bridge of "FEARLESS."
In another part, the members are seen inching towards the stage with the heel of their feet, holding their arms together as they do so.
OP noted that this is similar to LE SSERAFIM's hero step from their latest comeback, "EASY."
OP also mentioned another choroegraphy of I'LL-IT that copies NewJeans. In their performance of "My World," the girls are seen bending down with their arms outstretched, and snapping up to do a body wave with their hands behind their heads.
This is highly reminiscent of the point choreography of NewJeans' "Attention" choreography."
K-Netz Debate on Whether I'LL-IT 'Magnetic' Choreography Copied NewJeans & LE SSERAFIM
People believe that while they may not have blatantly copied NewJeans and LE SSERAFIM, it is highly likely they took reference. One netizen commented that one part of I'LL-IT's dance looks uncannily similar to NewJeans' "Ditto" dance.
Korean netizens believe that I'LL-IT as a whole is largely inspired by their seniors, LE SSERAFIM and NewJeans, so it is no surprise they took inspiration from their work. However, not everyone likes that this is the case, with some believing the moves were made similar on purpose so that people would talk about it and earn the group more attention.
Some comments read:
- "Aren't they doing this for noise marketing? We have to stop giving them attention."
- "They even copied the formation for 'Attention.' Are they crazy?"
- "They probably added these moves for viral marketing."
- "From the start, the company tried to copy their other groups for their debut. The moves are pretty common, but they put all those moves in one dance for viral marketing. There's no denying it."
- "It is short, but 'Magentic' overlaps with the 'Ditto' dance too. I'm not sure since I don't know much about dance, but seeing all the overlaps, even if you say they didn't plagiarize, you should at least admit they referenced NewJeans and LE SSERAFIM."
