Daniel Radcliffe West End 2013: Former Harry Potter Actor Dazzles Critics In ‘The Cripple Of Inishmaan’

Daniel Radcliffe’s acting tricks are dazzling people on West End. The former Harry Potter actor has won magical reviews for his latest stage role as a disabled Irish dreamer in the West End production, “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” according to the Associated Press.

This recent West End performance of Daniel Radcliffe proves that he “is a fine stage actor with a gift of playing social outsiders,” wrote The Guardian’s Michael Billington.

Libby Purves of the Times of London praised Daniel’s “still, melancholy intensity and resolve” in this 2013 West End role for the young star.

The original star of “How To Succeed In Business,” plays the title role of Billy, a 17-year-old orphan on a remote island in 1930s Ireland, who sees a chance of escape from a life of boredom and mockery when an American film crew arrives on a neighboring island to shoot the film “Man of Aran.”

“The Cripple of Inishmaan” is directed by Michael Grandage and is being shown at London’s Noel Coward Theatre.

First stage in 1996, the play is a dark take on Irish identity from writer Martin McDonagh. McDonagh has written or directed the films “In Bruges” and “Seven Psychopaths.”

Daniel Radcliffe is no stranger to challenging stage and screen roles.

In his 2007 stage debut in Peter Shaffer’s “Equus,” the magical hero of J.K. Rowling’s novels was required bare all, emotionally and physically. His Broadway debut in “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” demanded the actor to do complex song and dance numbers with an experienced cast.

His recent movie roles are a remarkable departure from the boy wizard that he was. They have included a role as Beat poet Allan Ginsberg in “Kill Your Darlings” and a bereaved man who mysteriously grows devilish horns in “Horns” by French horror auteur Alexandra Aja.

Speaking with the London Evening standard, Daniel said Tuesday that two of his dream roles are musical satirist Tom Lehrer and rocker Iggy Pop.

"The Cripple of Inishmaan," which runs until Aug. 31, is part of a West End season of plays overseen by Grandage.
