Serena Williams Steubenville Victim Blaming Prompts Awkward Backpedal Apology

Serena Williams' Steubenville victim blaming prompted her apologize for her comments--- or, well, backpedal.Williams said the 16-year-old victim of the gruesome Steubenville, Ohio rape case "put herself in that position" and questioned her virginity.

Now, Serena Williams is backpedaling for blaming the victim in the Steubenville rape case. Rolling Stone magazine wrote the piece.Tennis star Serena Williams said "I'm not blaming the girl,  but if you're a 16-year-old and you're drunk like that, your parents should teach you: Don't take drinks from other people. She's 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn't remember?"

(Umm....because sixteen year olds often experiment with alcohol and are inexperienced with moderating substances?)

She also said that what happened to the girl "could have been much worse." (How, exactly?)

"She's lucky," Williams added. "Obviously I don't know, maybe she wasn't a virgin, but she shouldn't have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that's different."

(Oh, right, it's not rape unless you're drugged.)

Williams saw the story being covered on a TV and asked the Rolling Stone reporter,  "Do you think it was fair, what they got?", shaking her head. "They did something stupid, but I don't know."

In the now-notorious Steubenville, Ohio rape case, two high school football players, Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond, allegedly raped an intoxicated 16-year-old girl at a party, with classmates documenting the incident via social media. Both also boys used their hands to penetrate the girl. In March, Mays was sentenced to one year in juvenile detention; Richmond was sentenced to two years. When they turn 21, they may have to register as sex offenders.

Furor erupted over Serena Williams' Steubenville remarks on social media. Williams issued a public apology, saying,

"What happened in Steubenville was a real shock for me. I was deeply saddened. For someone to be raped, and at only sixteen, is such a horrible tragedy! For both families involved - that of the rape victim and of the accused."

Williams added, "I am currently reaching out to the girl's family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article. What was written -- what I supposedly said -- is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame."

Somehow, Williams' verbal rebound isn't as strong as her tennis swing.

Williams recently won the 2013 French Open, her 16th Grand Slam title.
