Ground Beef Recall Due To E. Coli: Massive 22K Pound Meat Recall 2013- Package Codes Affected

A massive ground beef recall just announced by the FDA is prompting a consumer scare.   Almost 23,000 pounds are being recalled.

The United States Food Safety and Inspection Service are recalling 22,737 pounds of ground beef product manufactured at a Kansas plant. The ground beef is being recalled due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7.

The recall is being categorized as a "Class 1" health hazard, meaning there is a reasonable chance that eating the contaminated meat will serious health consequences or even death.

The beef recalled has a use/sell date of June 13, 2013 and were produced on May 25, 2013. Much of it may have been frozen for later use.

The following package codes are effected:

10 pound packages of "National Beef" 80/20 Coarse Ground Chuck, package code "0481"

10 pound packages of "National Beef" 81/19 Coarse Ground Beef, package code "0421"

10 pound packages of "National Beef" 80/20 Fine Ground Chuck, package code "0484"

The FSIS is concerned that much of the product affected was bought by institutions or retail stores. It may have been repackaged due to the bulk packaging or frozen for later use. Consumers are advised to check their freezers.

No illnesses have been reported. The National Beef website notes that the recall was voluntary, stating,

"This recall is voluntary, and there have been no reported illnesses related to the recall.  We are working closely with authorities to investigate this matter and are contacting our customers who have purchased this product ... The recall is regional, affecting 22,737 pounds of ground beef produced on May 25, 2013 with a use by/freeze by date of June 14, 2013."
