Super Junior Ryeowook's Past Comment On Idols Being Forced To Sing Live In Comeback Stages Reminisced By K-Netz

On April 14, Korean netizens flocked to an online thread discussing a past debate regarding lip-syncing and live singing during comeback stages.

For additional context, the topic revolved way back in 2014, when the year's existing chief producer Park Hyun Seok criticized idols who "don't use their voices" in MBC's "Music Core."

Park Hyun Seok stated:

"Singers who don't express a single word of their vocals will not be put on the stage.

There may be times when MR (music recorded) is played to suit the song, but I don't think only recorded music should be played without the singer's live vocals. If a live performance is not possible depending on the situation, it will be performed during stage rehearsal.

The purpose is that singers should sing in their own voices, even if they play pre-recorded songs. Doubling or overlapping voices with MR is okay, since there are times you may not be able to perform live music, but 100 percent lip-syncing is not allowed.

At the very least, you should not commit to foul play. I don't think there is any problem at all for singers who can actually sing on stage."

In response to this, Ryeowook clapped back to the producer's comments, claiming that the shows don't even make an effort to invest in the sound system quality's improvement, which would also affect the backing of live vocals.

"The sound system is as important to singers as the fancy stage production and lighting. It is indeed a problem for a performance-oriented idol to just sing loudly, but it seems tyrannical to only emphasize the live performance without any room for improvement or reform."

Afterwards, Park Hyun Seok replied to the candid take and explained that he only wanted to see idols sharpen their singing skills.

"We're not trying to crack down 100 percent lip-syncing right now. This is a campaign to gradually reduce the use of MR where voices are already recorded.

Idols should be in and out of plastic surgery, going to the gym to build their bodies, and listening to songs instead of just focusing on dancing. If an artist has a lot to show, they can come in advance to record it and confirm they've indeed sung live."

Eventually, Super Junior appeared on the music program to promote "MAMACITA."

The performance was lauded in 2014, as netizens claimed that Super Junior, especially Ryeowook, became the ones who proved the producer wrong when it came to live singing.

Here's how netizens reacted:

  • "What he said is true though, that the equipment of the music shows is indeed worse no matter how good the skills are getting."
  • "As expected, if you're talented, your words become more convincing."
  • "Only Ryeowook can talk like that."
  • "But what he says is real. I just watched my bias' stage on Gayo Daejejun and the sound system was shameful, those music shows should f**king do better too."
