Former EXO Tao Claims DJ Martin Garrix Stood Him Up
On April 20, 2024, Tao took to a livestream to accuse Martin Garrix of unprofessional and rude behavior. The live stream, which was done backstage at the event itself, featured Tao slamming the Dutch DJ for being a no-show during their set at the Checkred Flag Music Carnival.
For reasons unknown, Martin Garrix did not follow through with their original plan. Tao noted that he also did not participate in the rehearsals on top of not joining Tao for their segment at the event.
In the end, Tao was forced to take the stage alone so as not to ruin the show. He apologized to the audience for being different from what was advertised. Previously, the organizers of the show claimed the two would come together to perform.
During his livestream after the show, Tao stated it was the first time he experienced such a situation in his 13 years as a pop star. In his retelling of events, Martin Garrix did an hour-long solo set at 7:00 PM but ignored his collaboration with Tao. The Chinese star waited until 8:00 PM but never heard from Garrix after. He stated,
"I am over 30 years and in my 13 years in showbiz, this is the first time I have encountered something like this. He refused to stand on the same stage as me and violated our original agreement without any reason. The show started at 7:00 PM, he did a solo set for an hour but ignored the part he had to do with him. I waited for him until 8:00 PM, and I didn't get a word from him regarding if he was going to perform with me or not. He was so disrespectful to me. That is unacceptable."
Martin Garrix Responds to Backlash After Supposedly Ignoring Tao
Following the backlash, Martin Garrix released his own video explaining his side. He stated that due to his schedule, he was unable to participate in the rehearsals, and he flew to China the morning of the show. He initially stated that he was not informed he would be collaborating with Tao, and it was informed to him later on.
Martin Garrix then claimed that during his set, he played his collaboration song with Tao as the final song, but that the Chinese singer did not show up. In his Instagram comments, he reiterated again that he was ready for the collaboration, but Tao was nowhere to be seen.
However, this was swiftly debunked. It was noted that posters promoting the event explicitly state that Tao would be collaborating with Martin Garrix.
Additionally, Tao was holding a live stream during Garrix's set. He is seen by the side of the stage, continuously asking the production team when he can go on stage.
