Beef Recall June 2013: E.Coli Risk Prompts Massive 23,000 Pound Ground Beef Recall

Beef recall due to E.Coli  prompting customer scare.

A massive ground beef recall of was just announced by the FDA. Almost 23,000 pounds of beef are being recalled. The beef recalled was made at a Kansas plant.

The United States Food Safety and Inspection Service are recalling 22,737 pounds of ground beef product manufactured at a Kansas plant. The National Beef brand ground beef is being recalled due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7.

The recall is being categorized as a "Class 1" health hazard, meaning there is a reasonable chance that eating the contaminated meat will serious health consequences or even death. Still, the National Beef recall was voluntary.

The beef recalled has a use/sell date of June 13, 2013 and were produced on May 25, 2013. Much of it may have been frozen for later use.

The following package codes are effected:

10 pound packages of "National Beef" 80/20 Coarse Ground Chuck, package code "0481"

10 pound packages of "National Beef" 81/19 Coarse Ground Beef, package code "0421"

10 pound packages of "National Beef" 80/20 Fine Ground Chuck, package code "0484"

The FSIS is concerned that much of the product affected was bought by institutions or retail stores. It may have been repackaged due to the bulk packaging or frozen for later use. Consumers are advised to check their freezers.

No illnesses have been reported. The National Beef website notes that the recall was voluntary, stating,

"This recall is voluntary, and there have been no reported illnesses related to the recall.  We are working closely with authorities to investigate this matter and are contacting our customers who have purchased this product ... The recall is regional, affecting 22,737 pounds of ground beef produced on May 25, 2013 with a use by/freeze by date of June 14, 2013."
