Hello Instagram Video, Bye Bye Vine: Facebook Launches 15-Second Video Feature With Filters

Instagram introduces video features to the popular photo-sharing app owned by Facebook, in what can only be seen as direct competition with Vine, the popular Twitter-owned app that lets users share six-second video clips on loop.

"We talk about Instagram as capturing and sharing the world's moments. It's not just about photography," Instagram founder Kevin Systrom told "Nightline" anchor Bill Weir in an exclusive interview, CNN reports. "There are a ton of moments in the world that can't be captured in single images."

The new video feature on Instagram will allow its 130 million users to record three to 15 seconds of video, apply one of the 13 special filters, and then share them with Instagram friends or through other social media platforms.

"It's everything we know and love about Instagram, but it moves," Systrom said.

For now, videos can only be shot from within the Instagram app, and existing video from your phone's camera roll cannot be uploaded into the app.

Vine has sprouted in popularity in the six months since it launched. The app has more than 13 million users.

According to The Washington Post, once the update was released to iPhone and Android users, #RIPVine was trending on Twitter, before #InstagramVideo took over. Then #UsingVineIsLike began trending, in which people compared Vine to "checking myspace" and "using a landline" - in other words, outdated technology.

But Vine was ready for competition. According to CNN.com, the app's co-founders posted several Vines Wednesday that suggest users will soon have the ability to save drafts, splice bits of multiple Vines together and browse content based on categories and genres.
