tripleS Sub-Unit Sparks Controversy: Fans Vote, But Does Talent Matter

In a bold move that has sparked both excitement and controversy within the K-Pop community, rookie girl group tripleS announced the formation of their new sub-unit, Visionary Vision, on June 13.

This sub-unit, which aims to emphasize high-tech dance and a boyish aesthetic, will feature a unique lineup chosen through fan voting - a decision that has raised eyebrows due to its potential implications.

tripleS, known for their innovative approach to fan engagement, introduced a voting system where fans earn tokens, dubbed "COMO," by purchasing NFT photocards called "Objekts."

These tokens are then used to cast votes for their favorite members, influencing who gets selected for high-profile projects like sub-units.

This method, while innovative, has drawn criticism for potentially reducing the creative process to a popularity contest, overshadowing merit-based selection.

The controversy intensified when the final lineup of Visionary Vision was revealed on June 18.

Out of the 12 members selected, two were pre-determined (Yubin and Lynn), while the remaining ten were chosen through fan votes.

Among the selected members was Yooyeon, who, despite not being part of the group's designated dance line, garnered enough votes allegedly due to her personal outreach to fans expressing her desire to be in the sub-unit.

Yooyeon's inclusion has sparked discussions about the integrity of tripleS's voting process.

Some argue that personal appeals and popularity rather than talent and suitability for the concept may have influenced the results.

Critics suggest that such a system could foster resentment and internal competition among group members, potentially affecting group dynamics and morale.

The conversation surrounding Visionary Vision reflects broader concerns about the commercialization of fan engagement in K-Pop.

While fan involvement is crucial for fostering a loyal fanbase and boosting album sales, critics argue that monetizing votes through NFTs could prioritize profit over artistic integrity.

In response to the criticism, supporters of the voting system argue that it empowers fans and democratizes decision-making, allowing them to directly influence the group's activities.

However, detractors maintain that such systems may disproportionately benefit members with larger followings, undermining the group's unity and artistic cohesion.
