BLACKPINK Lisa shared the latest teasers for her upcoming comeback, "ROCKSTAR." Soon after, the idol was accused of cultural appropriation.
Lisa recently set the K-pop industry in a frenzy with the release of concept photos for her upcoming solo single "ROCKSTAR." This marks a significant moment for the idol, as it's her first musical project under her company, LLOUD.
The photos reveal a radical departure from her old K-pop idol image, showcasing Lisa with a bold, edgy look complete with a soft-cut hairstyle and dramatically transformed skin tone. This drastic transformation excited fans, but also sparked controversy.
With over 7 years as a K-pop visual icon, Lisa's 360-degree image change has left many stunned. Many believe this shows a shift towards cultivating a more global image. The style for "ROCKSTAR" seems influenced by iconic figures like Rihanna, embracing a more international musical identity.
However, her decision to darken her skin tone has touched on sensitive issues, sparking accusations of "blackfishing" (an act of someone who is not black and attempts to look black through make-up, tanning, or filters). This is often for aesthetic or commercial purposes.
Netizens argue that Lisa, as an Asian artist, is appropriating black culture, leading to intense debates about cultural sensitivity and identity.

This isn't Lisa's first time being accused of cultural appropriation. Her braided hairstyle during the promotions for "MONEY" faced similar accusations, as it resembled styles traditionally worn by members of the black community. International fans slammed the artist for the use of the hairstyle.
Amid the backlash, Lisa's fans have rallied to her defense, arguing that the criticisms are an overreaction to a stylistic choice intended for artistic expression. They argued that without the full context of the "ROCKSTAR" music video, it is unfair to judge the concept's intentions and implications.

Earlier that month, Lisa announced the launch of her company, LLOUD.
Back in April, Lisa signed a partnership with RCA Records for her solo music. As part of her deal, she will have full ownership of all her recordings.
