WJSN's Exy Spills the Tea Behind the Difficult Blind Selection Process for Idol Producers Ko Seung Ah/News1

Chu Sojung, hereinafter Exy, established her name in the music scene as the leader and main rapper of the girl group WJSN, and later on also became known as an actress.

But apart from her idol career, some fans are not aware of her extraordinary influence as a producer. In fact, aside from making tracks for her WJSN, she also collaborated with other groups to make memorable works, such as ILLIT's "Pimple," CRAVITY's "Bad Habits," and THE BOYZ's "PRISM."

In her interview with Ten Asia, Exy discussed IVE's 2024 hit "HEYA" and revealed an anecdote about the song.

"I put a lot of thought into how to create a richer story based on the story of the sun and the moon. It was even more meaningful because I was able to capture IVE's unique color and the response was good. I didn't know it would become the title track, so I was even happier with the unexpected results."

Currently, she's one of the "copyright powerhouses" together with BIGBANG's G-Dragon and (G)I-DLE's Soyeon.

However, reaching that status wasn't easy for her in the middle of the tough and grueling process before having her name included in the roster of producers.

Even in the case of producing WJSN's songs, they can only use her song if it was chosen through a blind selection process.

"The competition is extremely fierce. It's really hard work. Just as much as being selected for an audition for a work, you also have to be chosen by someone. You have to go through that process to get your name on the credits. It's a huge sense of accomplishment to see your name engraved on the credits," narrated Exy.

In the same interview, the idol producer also chose which is easier to produce for female versus male groups, and she chose the latter.

"Producing for male idols was easier in terms of accessibility. I have been exposed to a lot of hip-hop genre while rapping. So rather than feeling it was difficult, I had fun working on it," she concluded.
