Rembrandt Van Rijn Google Doodle Celebrates 407th Birthday: Five Facts You Probably Didn't Know About The Dutch Painter Of 'The Night Watch'

Rembrandt Van Rijn's 407th birthday is marked today by a Google Doodle, which shows Rembrandt's 1659 oil on canvas "Self Portrait with Beret and Turned-Up Collar." We've put together five interesting facts you probably didn't know about the famous Dutch painter.

"Self Portrait with Beret and Turned-Up Collar" is currently held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and was picked by Google to celebrate the artist's birth, in Leyden, Holland on 15 July 1606, The Telegraph reports.

The Doodle shows Rembrandt looking somber and collected on the right of the "Google" logo, which is etched into a canvas of deep brown, depicting Rembrandt's famous use of rich color and play on light and shadow, also called chiaroscuro. The Dutch painter is recognized as one of the greatest of all portraitists, according to The Telegraph.

Below are five interesting facts you probably didn't know about Rembrandt Van Rijn:

1.       A few years before "Self Portrait with Beret and Turned-Up Collar" was painted, Rembrandt had a daughter by his much younger maid, Hendrickje Stoffels.

2.       Rembrandt died in Amsterdam in 1669, and outlived both young Hendrickje (who died in 1663) and his only son, Titus, who passed the year before his father would, The Washington Post reports. Though Rembrandt was successful during his life, he lived beyond his means, and was buried in an unmarked grave.

3.       Unlike his contemporaries, Rembrandt didn't come from a family of artists or craftsman. His father was a miller and his mother came from a family of bakers, IBN Live reports.

4.       After studying 36 of Rembrandt's self-portraits, many believe that Rembrandt's eyes failed to align correctly, and he suffered from stereo blindness.

5.       Queen Beatrix reopened the national Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam this April, after a decade-long renovation. The reopening drew thousands of visitors eager to see Rembrandt van Rijn's "The Night Watch," his most celebrated and famous piece.
