iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 Release Date Rumors: Specs Predictions Include Larger, IGZO-based LCD Screen, More Powerful Camera

The iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 will be released very soon, as rumors suggested that the wait is less than two months. Apple, in keeping with company tradition and tragedy, has released no details about the launch of the phones.

The analysts and reporters of InfoWorld have made seven predictions about the possible features of the upcoming iPhone 5s.

The first prediction made by InfoWorld is an Indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) screen. The IGZO is the newest technology for LCD screens and analysts are speculating that Apple will be the first to adopt it. Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chodhry predicted earlier this year that Apple would move to the IGZP for the iPhone, iPad, and some MacBooks, explaining the decrease in the number of order for LCD screens out of Cupertino.

The IGZO allows for a brighter screen that needs less power and can be manipulated into curved shapes. It is not as expensive as the low-temperature polysilicon screen Apple is currently using and is 40 times more responsive than traditional LCD screens. The IGZO technology responds well to pen input if Apple decides to take advantage of this feature. Since Apple has been using styli since the 1993 Newton MessagePad, it is unlikely the will switch right away.

Prediction number two from InfoWorld is a larger display for the future phone. As the iOS7 supports screen-scaling, suggesting that in the future iPhones will come in multiple screen sizes. This implies that the iPhone 5S could have a larger display than it’s predecessor. However, Apple said last fall that multiple screen sizes could cause problems for developers because they would have to create multiple versions of user interfaces for the applications.

For this reason, the iPad Mini and the iPad 2 have the same pixel count. Apple then suggested that they would be fine if multiple screen sizes were possible without developers having to adapt their apps. Rumors seem to agree that the iPhone 5S will not have a larger screen, but the iPhone 6 in 2014 will.

NFC technology support is the third prediction created by InfoWorld. This rumor has been ongoing despite the fact that the technology has existed for two years and has been seldom used. The Android and Blackberry have adopted this technology, but its use has been limited. Apple’s Passbook service takes advantage of the much easier onscreen bar codes, as does applications like Square. NFC is being used on Android devices as a passkey for buildings, but Apple devices supports Bluetooth 4 that can be used for door locks and cars. It appears that Bluetooth will continue to be Apple’s universal short-range radio exchange technology of choice with iOS’s in the car technology and AirDrop, an ad-hoc file sharing connection that uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Prediction four from InfoWorld is that the iPhone 5S will either integrate game controllers or function as a controller itself. iOS 7 already has game controller support and game controllers for the operating system will be created in the future. Given this information, it is possible that the iPhone 5S will take advantage of this technology. However, since the iPod touch is Apple’s most popular gaming platform, it seems to be more likely that it will be the device with controller support.

The fifth prediction by InfoWorld is that the iPhone 5S will have a better camera than the iPhone 5. Possible improvements are unknown, but according to 9to5Mac, may include a better mexapixel rating than the current 8 mexapixels on iPhone 5. 9to5Mac also suggests that dual LEDs and slow motion capability will be features of the new cameras on the iPhone 5S.

Prediction number six by InfoWorld is a faster processor. The iPhone 5 is currently equipped with a 1.3GHz, dual core A6 processor. It is possible that the iPhone 5S will have iPad 4’s new dual core A6X or the new quad core A7 processor.

The seventh and final prediction from InfoWorld is higher storage capacity for the iPhone 5S. Instead of 16, 32, and 64GB it could have 32, 64, and 123 GB of storage. However, Apple is pushing the iCloud, which may cause device storage to decrease to encourage users to move to the iCloud.

It is uncertain when exactly the new iPhone will be revealed. History suggests that September or October will hold the unveiling event. One thing is for certain, the new iPhone will be revealed before the holiday shopping season.
