iPad 5, iPad Mini 2 Release: Apple’s Smaller Tablet Not Arriving Until First Quarter 2014, Retina Display Component Caused Hold Up

The next generation iPad Mini 2 with retina display may not be released until 2014. Apple originally planned to launch the tablet this fall, but according to China’s Economic Daily News, the company may delay the 7.9-inch tablet until the first quarter of 2014. The report also suggested that moving the release date will mean that the iPad Mini 2 will not receive an update this year.

A week after “supply chain” sources claim the iPad mini 2 will be delayed because of the inclusion of the Retina Display. DigiTimes posted that sources suggest the iPad mini 2 will be launched at the end of 2013. Rumors about the iPad mini 2 continue to circulate, one of which claims the iPad Mini 2 release date will be delayed to prevent a sales clash with the iPad 5.

The delayed launch of the iPad Mini 2 has been consistent with an earlier prediction by KGI Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, reported by the International Business Times. Kuo speculated that the iPad Mini 2 would be launched later than previously expected because of “technical challenges” in the manufacturing process.

The iPad 5 is supposed to launch in September. The Taiwanese sources of DigiTimes claim “upstreamed suppliers” have almost finished production of the tablet and Apple probably will not be issuing specification changes. The latest iPad 5 rumors, include the continuance of the Retina Display, a sleeker bezel design to allow for a larger viewing area, a LED tube, and improved battery life.

If these newest round of rumors are true, then earlier reports that it’s going to be a giant September launch for Apple are effectively refuted.

There have been speculations that the Cupertino tech giant intends to launch it’s new tablet iterations and the highly rumored iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 all at once. The goal is to compete with the increasing attention and market share that Android tablets are gaining.
