"Orange Is The New Black" Star Laura Prepon Talks Divas, Intimidating Roles, And Netflix Award-Winning Show [VIDEO]

"Orange Is The New Black" has been getting rave reviews. Watch a preview for the show below. Laura Prepon is one of the stars. When she first read the role, she was scared of her character-but agreed to play it anyway.

"When I read it, it was so good but I was like, 'Wow, (the character) Alex scares me a little bit,' which is exactly why I needed to do it and I'm so glad that I did," Prepon said. "I feel like every actress is always looking to (push the envelope) because the minute you get complacent, hang it up."

"Orange Is The New Black" is the latest Netfix original series, ready for binge-watching anytime. It regards a woman named Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) who is happily engaged to be married to a man in Brooklyn, NY. However, she has a secret-she carried drug money in a suitcase once for her girlfriend, Alex (played by Prepon) in her early 20s. Ten years later, she is named as part of a drug ring and sent to the same facility where Alex is doing time.

"Orange Is the New Black" is based on a memoir of the same name about spending a year in a women's correctional facility. It highlights hierarchy, pecking order, and racial relations in the prison.

"Anyone that sees the show they're like, 'Oh, there's nothing like this on TV.' Which there isn't and that's really cool," the 33-year-old Prepon said.

Dylan Matthews from the Washington Post called Orange Is the New Black "the best TV show about prison ever made." His review compares it to well-established dramas such as Breaking Bad and Mad Men.

Mashable's Nora Grenfell called it "the series Netflix was made for," and indeed, Netflix has been nominated for a host of awards for the first time as a result.

Grenfell cited the show as it's "a new kind of show that thrives under the streaming programming model rather than being compromised by it."

The series has been acclaimed as "raw", and that was part of the goal. Creator Jenji Kohan said she wanted to make it "as raw and real as possible," she said. "We wear like literally the federal prison-issue wardrobe. We're not allowed to wear a lot of makeup. ... There's a story line where I actually barter to get black eyeliner, so every inmate has their own kind of thing that individualizes them."

And the show mostly features, well, women. It's a little strange for Prepon.

"I grew up with guys. I'm not used to hanging out with a bunch of chicks," she said in an interview. "My friends were like, 'What are you gonna do with all those women around?' But they're amazing. There's not one diva. Everyone is so cool."
