Motorcyclist Andrea Antonelli Killed Sunday After Crash In The Rain [VIDEO]: Race Continues And More Wrecks Ensued
Motorcyclist Andrea Antonelli killed Sunday after a high-speed crash during a World Supersport Championship race in Moscow.
The Italian Motorcyclist Andrea Antonelli killed was a racer for Team Go Eleven Kawasaki. The 25-year-old lost control of his Kawasaki motorcycle during the first lap of the race and collided with fellow Italian Lorenzo Zanetti, who was traveling more than 150 mph in the rain, according to NewsMax.
The race stopped immediately as he was taken off by an ambulance. When the race continued, Marco Melandri was the winner of the race while Antonelli was on his way to the hospital and died.
"Despite their efforts, Andrea sadly succumbed to his injuries at 2:10 p.m. local time," FIM World Championship, the sport's sanctioning body said in a statement after motorcyclist Andrea Antonelli was killed Sunday. "Everyone involved in motorcycle championships extends its deepest condolences to Andrea's family, friends, team, and the Italian Federation at this tragic loss."
When rushed to the hospital, Dr. Massimo Corbascio said there was "absolutely nothing" they can do to save him.
"In these cases, even if you intubate someone and take them to the intensive care unit - he remains a body attached to a machine with no brain, there's just blood in the brain," Corbascio told SportingLife.com.
There were a number of other crashes during the race.
"Tom Sykes' (Kawasaki Racing Team) second technical problem of the weekend resulted in a no-score for the Brit, as his bike stopped and got on fire during the fourth lap. A big number of crashes took place and involved Carlos Checa (Team Ducati Alstare), Jules Cluzel (FIXI Crescent Suzuki), Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing Aprilia), Eugene Laverty (Aprilia Racing Team), Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike), Lorenzo Savadori (Team Pedercini Kawasaki) and Vittorio Iannuzzo (Grillini Dentalmatic BMW)," according to worldsbk.com.
