Less than a month before the mammoth release of "The Amazing Spider Man 2" there are already talks about the sequel. One major component of the Spider Man canon is Mary Jane Watson, whom viewers know will eventually become Mrs. Peter Parker.

The original actress that was cast for the role of Mary Jane Watson is Shailene Woodley, the star of the recent YA (young adult) dystopian franchise "Divergent." It was a big hit, and the success has insured the greenlighting of "Insurgent" the next installment in the YA novel series.

While the sequel for her new franchise is certain, her presence in the Spider Man movies are marked with uncertainty. In an interview with Total Film, there are a lot of things she doesn't know: "I don't even know that I would want to do two franchises at this point. I don't know anything, but seeing as how they picked up the next two Divergent films, I don't know how I would keep my sanity with two big action films in one year."

Director Marc Webb of "The Amazing Spider Man 2" has even cut out all the scenes involving Mary Jane in the sequel. There is a big possibility that the role will be recast.

There were some rumors that Woodley was already out of the film even before "Divergent" was shown. The chemistry that developed between Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, both on and off the screen, has precipitated the demand for more of Stone's Gwen Stacy character.

In contrast, critics and fans have opined that Woodley would make a bad Mary Jane. From Screenrant, user Oneiros shares: "She's not the knockout that Mary Jane needs to be. Emma stone should've been MJ but oh well. Woodley should just go with the Divergent series and they should recast the part. cast Elena Satine or Jane Levy or something."

In Sam Raimi's Spider Man trilogy in the early 2000s, Mary Jane was played by Kirsten Dunst and the role was very significant. The reboot series may take a very different turn, especially if they don't find the right actress for the iconic role.
