New York Knicks Coach Is Steve Kerr? Phil Jackson Protégé To Lead Big Apple Brainthrust! Can He Save The Knicks?

The New York Knicks have made a quick decision with their coaching vacancy. A couple of weeks from Mike Woodson's departure, Phil Jackson's protégé Steve Kerr is reportedly being offered the position.

The Knicks are not alone in their pursuit of the TNT's top analyst. The Golden State Warriors are reportedly interested in acquiring his services after a tumultuous season with Mark Jackson.

While another Cinderella playoff run may urge the Warriors owners to keep Jackson, the New York Knicks are in full pursuit. No less than Steve Kerr's former coach with the Chicago Bulls, Phil Jackson, is giving the directive to hire Kerr. Phil is now the President of the New York Knicks.

Kerr talked to ESPN and nothing is final yet:

"We will keep talking. There is a lot to cover on both sides. This was the first time we've talked about the job. It just opened up last week. We've got a lot of things to discuss."

Kerr admits that he finds the job intriguing. "How could it not? It's the Knicks and Phil Jackson, my coach. I would be crazy not to look into it." Kerr's bold declaration that he's willing to take the reins of a franchise that has the most rabid fan base speaks well of his courage.

What makes the job more challenging is that this will be the former NBA Champion's first ever coaching job. He has served as a General Manager for Phoenix, but never worked in a coaching capacity.

"I know Phil [said] we shared the same space, which I think is well said. We share a lot of the same philosophies. I learned a lot of my basketball from him and Tex Winter (in reference to the Triangle Offense that Jackson has used en route to 11 NBA coaching titles, the most for any coach)."

"It is safe to say that we have a lot of the same ideas. As far as getting into the details of the triangle and that sort of thing, I am not going to expand on that. Obviously there is a strong connection between us and our beliefs."

There are many pressing matters to address if and when Kerr becomes the Knicks' head coach. Foremost among them is the Carmelo Anthony situation. Kerr avoided any presumptuous talk: "Those are details that have to be private. Those are things that Phil and I are going to discuss further, all kinds of things, organizationally, personnel-wise, but those discussions are all private."

Kerr has hit big shots as a player before. Can his players do the same when he becomes head coach?
