Sony Xperia Z Ultra Review: Mega Smartphone Specs Incl. 6.4” Display, Snapdragon 800 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB Memory, 8 MP; Does The Size Meet The Quality?

Sony Xperia Z Ultra review: Powered by a Snapdragon 800 processor that clocks at 2.2 GHz, Sony's giant smartphone sports a 6.4-inch capacitive touchscreen display, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage (extendable up to 64 GB), Android 4.2 Jelly Bean (upgradable to 4.4.4 KitKat) OS, and an 8 MP rear camera. From the run through of its specs, it seems like the huge size is all that this smartphone is going for.

After its release last July 2013, the giant smartphone is a direct competition against Samsung Galaxy Mega's size and the Galaxy Note 3's specs.

Measuring 7.06 x 3.63 x 0.26 inches and weighing 212 grams, the Xperia Z Ultra is definitely a handful. Experts are even saying that with its size and weight, it is already a bordering tablet. With an all-black body that gives more of a premium look, this smartphone has the same feel as the Nexus 7 model. However, its dust and water proof IP58 certified feature is definitely an edge.

Speaking of edge, the Xperia Z Ultra's most evident advantage is its monster screen-a 6.4-inch capacitive touchscreen that has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a pixel density of 344 ppi, with an additional shatter proof glass protection. This kind of screen is perfect for those who enjoy an overwhelming viewing experience on a portable gadget. However, critics are saying that its color is a bit washed out.

In terms of performance, the Xperia Z Ultra's processor fares well. However, with all that body, Sony could have done better.

The biggest problem with this smartphone is its low-quality camera. With such a huge screen size, the Xperia Z Ultra's cameras are quite mediocre. Its rear camera is only 8 MP with no LED flash, while its front is 2 MP.

With fair specs, a sad camera, and a monstrous display, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is not the sharpest tool in the shed. Still, if you're after a huge viewing experience, then this would do. Or better yet, why don't you get a tablet instead.
