‘True Detective’ Season 2 Cast Rumors: Vince Vaughn To Take One Of Four Central Roles? HBO Teases The Script Is 'More Exciting Than The First Season!'

The breakthrough HBO series "True Detective" is now gearing for its 2nd season. After the Emmy victories, the casting call for the next lead roles have begun. Matthew McConaughey will be a tough act to follow, but candidates have emerged for a more exciting season!

Series creator Nic Pizzolatto talked with The Daily Beast, and as always, he does not reveal too many specifics. He does tease that he has already written characters that have established an 'attachment' with him at the level of Rust and Marty (Matthew and Woody's characters). From The Daily Beast:

"..since then they've(new characters in the script) deepened and become richer. Creating new characters for Season 2 was the same experience as creating Rust and Marty. They didn't exist until I created them, then in their creation I developed a personal attachment to them. I think it's the same in anything you write. It's your job to come up with compelling characters who speak to an individual authenticity. If I'm not interested in the characters I can't go on. I have to be fascinated by them. It's the same job as Season 1 to me."

And perhaps, the only thing he specified was the number of central characters. Previously, he mentioned there were three: "That ballooned a little bit. I would say there are four central roles."

The burning question:  Q: Are any of them women? "You'll have to wait and see."

The marginalization of female characters was a main criticism of True Detective. This sparked the female lead role comment by Pizzolatto, that also sparked the Jessica Chastain rumor.

Of course, the casting for Season 1 is a tough act to follow, but HBO programming president Michael Lombardo points out that it's not the show's strength. From EW: "The two scripts we have ... I hate to jinx it ... they are more exciting than the first season. [Creator Nic Pizzolatto is] an incredibly talented writer. And he's blown us away with the first two episodes."

That being said, the casting bar is not going down: "The people we will cast will be well-known names, but [casting stars] wasn't our ambition. Great writing attracts great actors... Maybe people initially came for [Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson], but I think they stayed because the show was so compelling."

The latest cast rumor came from TV Line, which tags Vince Vaugh!:

"TVLine has learned exclusively that the Swingers actor is in preliminary talks to play one of the three leads in the HBO drama's upcoming second season."

The kneejerk reaction would be to question Vaughn's drama chops since he is known as a comedian. But Vaughn does have imposing features.

The rumor has not been confirmed, same goes for the Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch rumors that surfaced weeks ago. The keyword is that they are "in talks."
