Windows Phone 8.1 Release Date: Update 1 Now Available For Developers, Adds Folders In Home Screen, Multi-Lingual Cortana, Other Features

If you are one of the thousands who have signed up for the Developer Preview version of Windows Phone 8.1 release date, then you can already download the first update for version 8.1.

Whether you have already installed the official version of WP 8.1, which is Lumia Cyan for Nokia phones, or you are still running the Developer Preview version of the latest Windows Phone version, you can download Update 1 as long as you have subscribed to the Preview versions.

Unfortunately, those running the official version of Windows Phone 8.1 and has not signed up for the Developer Preview versions should still wait for a few months until all the bugs and instabilities of the new update have been ironed out.

So what does Update 1 bring to WP 8.1?

According to a report by GSM Arena, the update will include a number of changes to the homescreen including the ability to create 'folders'. You can create these folders by dragging a tile in the homescreen and placing it on top of another. In the image above, it looks like you can create folders consisting up to 9 apps or tiles.

This is certainly a great change for WP 8.1 as it moves closer to Android-ish features, but still maintaining its own identity as a mobile platform.

Another notable change it the new Cortana app, which is now available for other countries to enjoy. In the initial release of WP 8.1, Cortana only works in the US, until now, but only for those with Developer Preview editions.

Other changes include a new Store live tile, better messaging management, and others. There are also rumors that the new version will be able to support interactive phone cases just like the Galaxy S5 and One M8. The One M8 has the cool Dot View case.
