‘The Raid’ Remake Cast: Taylor Kitsch Offered Lead Role! Will The Remake Do Better Than Spike Lee's 'Oldboy?'

"The Raid" has become a cult favorite and is now about to break into the mainstream with a Hollywood remake, reportedly starring Taylor Kitsch. Will they avoid bombing out like the Spike Lee's "Oldboy" remake?

Kitsch has recently been on the news as he is being considered for the young lead role in HBO's "True Detective" Season 2. The actors for that series will have huge shoes to fill as Matthew McConaughey recently took home the Emmy for Best Lead actor. That would sit well beside his Academy Award for "Dallas Buyers Club."

The negotiations for that have not been finalized but Kitsch's camp is also busy with another project: an English language remake of "The Raid."

"The Raid" has a very simple, almost video game sounding premise: A team of police officers raid an apartment building full of criminals to get to the penthouse where the kingpin resides. The congested environment and the creative presentation of the fight scenes was the key for the movies success. Gareth Evans wrote and directed "The Raid" which was set in Indonesia, as well as its sequel "The Raid 2."

The Wrap has the details on the remake: "Patrick Hughes ("The Expendables 3") is directing the action movie, which is gearing up for a January 2015 shoot. Coincidentally, that is when the second season of "True Detective" is slated to wrap filming.

While two sources told TheWrap that Kitsch is in negotiations for "The Raid," one cautioned that the two sides remain apart on financial terms of the proposed deal."

Recently, a remake of the Korean classic film "Oldboy" bombed at the box office. Despite having high profile stars (Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen) and being helmed by Spike Lee, movie fans were not quite impressed.

Could "The Raid" break that remake barrier as well as the stereotype that martial arts based movies need to be Asian?
