Samsung Market Share Continues To Slip In Major Markets, Ousted By Local Phone Maker Micromax In India

A couple of days ago, we read reports that the Samsung market share in Chna has been eclipsed by upcoming heavyweight and local brand Xiaomi, after two years of reigning as the top smartphone manufacturer in the Asian country.

Unfortunately for the Korean tech giant, the problems don't end in China.

According to a report by Android Authority, Samsung has been dethroned in India as well, where local phone maker Micromax has taken over the Android market in the Asian sub-continent.

In the report, Counterpoint Research says in its April-June quarterly report that Samsung only had 14.4 percent of the entire smartphone market, while Micromax's share of the pie has gone up to 16.6 percent.

Thankfully, these numbers are just for the smartphone market, though there is also clear indication that Samsung may lose its top spot in terms of all mobile phones in India.

The research firm says Samsung still has 25.3 percent of the entire mobile market in India, though Micromax is certainly not far behind with 19.1 percent.

Is this the end of Samsung? Absolutely not by all means.

The Korean tech giant has weathered almost every storm it has faced over the course of its existence in the mobile industry. But as new rivals eat on its market share and threaten to dethrone Samsung as the top Android phone maker, steps should be made.

This will include a much cheaper price tag for its smartphones, and all Samsung phones in general. Because Samsung is still a world-renowned brand, consumers may still pass on the couple of dollars which they would spend more. But if the difference goes beyond just a couple of dollars, then it's a no-brainer to pick a local brand that functions just as well, but costs a lot cheaper.
