Upcoming Android Phones 2014: Pantech Preparing Another Note Killer?

There are absolutely no shortage of upcoming Android phones for 2014, and these smartphones do not only come from the perennial favorites like Samsung, Sony LG and HTC.

Vivo has opened the way for th QHD (2560 x 1440) resolution display, and Oppo Find 7 got its own version of a 2K screen. A number of Indian and Chinese brands have also emerged and are slowly expanding from their home markets to other markets overseas.

Huawei and Xiaomi may be the most successful right now, as both phone makers develop high quality smartphones at affordable prices.

As far as the Korean market is concerned, it is clearly dominated by two heavyweights in electronics - Samsung and LG. However, phone maker Pantech may be looking to break the trend as it prepares a new phablet.

Last year, the Korean manufacturer unveiled what appeared to be a Galaxy Note 3 killer in the Pantech Vega. It boasted similar specs to the Samsung phablet, but was only available in Korea.

Now, it looks like the company is working on a phablet again.

According to a report by GSM Arena, a new Pantech handset, dubbed as Pantech Vega IM-A920S Pop Up Note, is rumored to be making its way to the market in the coming ways.

In the report, the handset looks decent and sturdy, thanks to its metal frame and a rugged-looking back cover to protect from slips.

But while the phone can be a potential contender to the Galaxy Note 4 in terms of specifications, the Pantech phablet immediately concedes with its year-old specs. It only packs a Snapdragon 800 chipset, a quad-core CPU running at 2.3GHz, and Adreno 330.

Sure, it has 2GB of RAM which is the same as the Galaxy S5, but at 5.5-inch of display, it is certainly in a different category altogether. Rounding up the specs are a 13MP primary camera, 2MP front cam, 16GB of internal memory and Android 4.4.2 Kit Kat out of the box.

Pantech may have picked the wrong contender this time, if the mobile maker does want to be relevant in the battle against Samsung or LG.
