'Constantine' TV Show Release Date And New Trailer: Guillermo Del Toro Teases Crossover of DC TV And Movie Universes [VIDEO]

Guillermo Del Toro has hinted at a combination of DC's movie and television universes, that is if he finds "Constantine" to his liking.

Guillermo del Toro sat down with IGN during San Diego Comic-Con to chat, and spoke briefly about the script and treatment for "Justice League Dark." He seemed quite happy about the fact that "he, DC Entertainment, and WB are seeing eye-to-eye" on the potential film adaption, which is still currently sitting in the scripting stage.

For those not so familiar with "Justice League Dark", it centers around a superhero team largely consisting of the more supernatural members of the DC Universe. The team was originally made up of Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, the Changing Man and Zatanna - a lineup that would certainly appeal to del Toro, considering his affinity for creatures, monsters, and everything in between.

Del Toro's lineup for his adaption is a little different featuring Etrigan the Demon, Deadman, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Constantine, and The Floronic Man specifically, but left the door open for a whole host of other DC Universe characters to find their way onto the big screen.

When IGN asked del Toro about DC and Warner. Bros' intentions to keep the universes separate - citing NBC's Constantine specifically as an example of a potential crossover into his film adaption - he said that he "would love to have The Spectre in it, because he's one of the most... absolutely, beyond moral characters in this universe and he does crazy things... but, I'm happy with... they're doing that with 'Constantine.' What I made clear to them is that the TV series will not effect the movie and they said that's okay. They said you can have independence. Now, if we see the TV series and we can mesh with it or cast the same actor depending on where the movie is going, I would be happy to consider that."

Del Toro also admitted that he would be keeping a close eye on the "Constantine" television series as a fan.

If del Toro plays his cards right, and impresses the studio heads at Warner Brothers, Justice League Dark could very well become one of the nine untitled DC films that are slated for release between 2016 and 2020.

Constantine is set to premiere on NBC on Friday, Oct. 24 at 10pm ET.

The original John Constantine from the DC Comics universe is an English working-class magician and occult detective living in London. Prior to his supernatural work, Constantine was a conman. His exploits were the subject of DC's supernatural comic franchise, Hellfire.

For the benefit of an American audience, showrunners have shifted the plot-setting to New York City. As a compromise with hardcore fans, Constantine will remain British as confirmed earlier this year by Bleeding Cool.

NBC's version of "Constantine" will star British actor Matt Ryan in the leading role. Ryan is better known for being the voice of Edward Kenway, the protagonist from the "Assassin's Creed 4" video game.

Gans were initially worried that NBC will be following its usual no-smoking policy that does not allow actors to smoke onscreen. The trouble with the rule is that the original Constantine is a notorious chain-smoker. Luckily, the network reached a compromise with the series creators. Instead, Constantine will be shown either lighting or putting out a cigarette -- implying his habit rather than showing it.

"Here's the deal. We cannot show him inhale [cigarettes]," "Constantine" executive producer David S. Goyer said to Screen Rant. "Our fervent hope is that fans will see that and appreciate the attempt.
