One of the most iconic Marvel superheroes, the Hulk is also the one who is most questioned scientifically. How could mild-mannered Dr. Bruce Banner turn into the living rage-fit Hulk? Should there be a mystical element to his powers instead of gamma radiation?

It turns out Stan Lee was actually on the money with his portrayal-or at least, he was close. If you want a real scientific breakdown of how the Hulk transforms from Bruce Banner into the Raging Green Giant, then look no further.

Stanford biologist Sebastian Alvarado actually broke down the Hulk's powers, from gamma radiation all the way to the transformation process that is usually rage induced. He also has a reason on what makes the Hulk green.

"The only molecular mechanics that I happen to know about that can turn on a gene and turn off a gene is epigenetic modification. Now imagine all the genes that correspond to being a normal, mild-mannered scientist like Bruce Banner, and all the genes involved with being rage Hulk, and imagine each of them having a light switch. An epigenetic modification could transition all of the switches that turn Bruce Banner into Bruce Banner and the Hulk into the Hulk. And the nice thing about all of this is that they're very reversible."

Hulk's transformation is not a genetic mutation, which would make him the Hulk in a permanent state like Beast of the X-Men or the Thing of the Fantastic Four. For the Hulk, there is a 'trigger' that activates the transformation.

One question that was not discussed is whether the rage trigger can be controlled, as displayed by Mark Ruffalo in "Avengers" with his classic remark "I'm always angry." How did Banner reach this point when he was also shown going berserk earlier in the movie?

But the most bothersome mystery-that baffled even the Stanford scientist-is how Hulk's pants stay on even when he transforms. Stan Lee still has some explaining to do.
