James Franco Releases New Trailer for 'Kink': Shocking Audio NSFW, Critics Otherwise Underwhelmed

More light continues to be shed on the world of BDSM with the trailer release of James Franco's latest project, "Kink." While you shouldn't expect to see the actor anywhere himself (it's a documentary about the highest grossing BDSM porn website afterall), the trailer also keeps the naked flesh to a minimum. The audio on the other hand is definitely NSFW. Sadly though, it looks like critics believe the documentary is only beginning to scratch the surface of the many issues surrounding the BDSM sex industry.

Earlier this week, the word "Kink" became more associated with a documentary than the kink.com website, as the somewhat racy trailer was released. As Indiewire reports, "The trailer, which features a lot of moaning and talking heads, pulls back the curtain on Kink.com, the internet's largest producer of BSDM content."

The film itself premiered at this years Sundance Film Festival, where the director, Christina Voros described the film: "In 'Kink', we discover not only a fascinating and often misunderstood subculture, but also, in a career far from the mainstream, a group of intelligent, charismatic, and driven people who really, truly love what they do."

Although the subject matter and James Franco's attachment suggest something to be excited over, early critics reviews paint the documentary otherwise. The Hollywood Reporter states that the film, "leaves plenty of room to presume that Kink.com is an outlier in the industry, and it never asks if good vibes behind the scenes have any correlation with the mindsets of the people who pay to watch these videos." Moreover, as Variety summarizes, "direct Christina Voros is here to educate rather than titillate, aiming to remove the unsavory stigma from an unusual leisure activity."

It would seem that based on this information, if you do decide to venture to theaters to see "Kink," expect to see a picture of the lives of those involved in BDSM, but no interpretation or meaning will be offered past that. "Kink" will have a limited release in New York City on August 22nd.
