Martin Scorsese HBO Shows In Development: 'Shutter Island Spinoff Should Be Titled 'Ashecliffe' And Untitled 1970s Rock'N'Roll Drama In The Works

As the lines between film and television continue to blur in terms of quality, a film legend makes his way to a director's seat with an equally legendary TV network. Martin Scorsese is currently in development with HBO to produce two new TV series. The first is a spinoff of his 2010 film "Shutter Island" that starred Leonardo DiCaprio. The other calls on the talents of "Boardwalk Empire's" Terence Winters and "Breaking Bad's" George Mastras and centers around rock'n'roll.

The "Shutter Island" spinoff entitled "Ashecliffe," "begins before the events of the movie, with Dennis Lehane (who wrote the novel the movie was based on) penning the pilot script, and Scorsese to direct" according to Indiewire. The Hollywood Reporter goes on: "The drama would explore the hospital's past and misdeeds by its founders - a la FX's American Horror Story: Asylum."

There's no news on when this series will be in production but Indiewire predicts that it won't be until Scorsese's latest project, "Silence," is finished. In the meantime the very busy director will continue to work with the executives behind "Boardwalk Empire" on what is being called an "untitled 1970s rock'n'roll drama." Both projects have surfaced as "Boardwalk Empire" prepares for its series end in September.

Speaking of "Silence," recall that it is based on the acclaimed novel by Shusaku Endo and will star Liam Neeson and Ken Watanabe. In January, the LA Times reported that the film was to begin production during this current summer. Deadline expects it to begin any day now.

Overall, it looks like good news for HBO, who will head into tonight's 66th Primetime Emmys with most of their shows nominated for awards. Scorsese on the hand, who already has a host of career achievements and continues to impress, will in the very least entertain with either of these ideas once they're off the ground.
