Lifetime's 'Girlfriend Intervention' Under Fire: Critics Say It's Nothing Like 'Queer Eye For The Straight Guy', So Offensive It Should Be Canceled?

Tonight marks the premiere of Lifetime's newest unscripted show, "Girlfriend Intervention." So far, critics are finding the show to be mostly offensive, promoting both Black and White stereotypes. In general, it seems like what may have been a great idea when first formed, has turned into yet another example of the problems with reality TV.

Lifetime describes "Girlfriend Intervention" as, "an all-new unscripted makeover series where each week four experts-beauty pro Tracy Balan, home and sanctuary guru Nikki Chu, style and fashion maven Tiffiny Dixon and soul coach Tanisha Thomas-help restore one woman's confidence and inner glow. In making over their wardrobes, beauty routines, homes and minds, our hosts teach these women how to embrace and celebrate their lives, speak their mind, lighten up and love themselves again."

Based on the initial reactions from both critics and social media, the show is far from this.

In Variety's review of the show, 'Girlfriend Intervention' is described as, "loud, brash and filled with stereotypes, it's hard to know what's most irritating - the sweeping declarations about black women as if they were monolithic, or the forced remodeling of women who are perfectly comfortable with their looks and style, after subjecting them to a 'Catwalk of Shame.'"

Jezebel was equally disappointed if not outraged with the show: "Perhaps what I hate most about this concept is that even as the presumed stars of the series, these four black women are still being relegated to the "sassy black friend" category."

Early Twitter reactions to the show, which premiered tonight at 7pm include, "wait. this is real? everybody wants to be black.....until it's time to be black! le sigh," and "#GirlfriendIntervention by @lifetimetv just seems like a bad idea. Way to promote racial stereotypes and offend both white and black women."

While no ratings have been released for the new series, some people have already seen enough and want the show to be discontinued. Or, as one commenter on Jezebel puts it, "just...no. I am so disappointed in everyone involved in this. I hope this fails spectacularly."
