Barclays Premier League: Eto'o for Everton

It was a signed two-year deal for Samuel Eto'o and Everton. The former Chelsea striker was delighted with the agreed contract.

The 33-year-old Cameroonian was a freelance agent following his Chelsea contract expiration after a year. Last season at Stamford Bridge, the first in the BPL for the three-times UEFA Champions League winner, the striker attained 9 goals in 16 starts and 21 matches overall. This includes a 'hat-trick' against Manchester United. Coincidentally, all of his Barclay Premier League goals were scored at Stamford Bridge.

The Everton manager, Roberto Martinez was lightened up to bring a determined player to Goodison Park. For Martinez, Eto'o is a best example of a player who had a trophy-laden career yet still has the desire for success.

"I met him and we had a very good chat about football in general and I was impressed about the hunger he still has," Martinez told evertonTV. "For someone who has achieved nearly everything, he still has the desire he had at 15 when he went to Spain and showed what he could do. For many reasons he has got a point to prove."

He added: "We are very excited and Everton is the perfect home for him. The fans will make him ready and feel sharp but we have got to be a bit patient with the fitness levels and make sure he is back to his best."

The club will face Chelsea which is Eto'o's former side. The said BPL fixture is scheduled on Saturday; but Martinez indicated that the striker may not be fit to be part of a match in the home fixture. Eto'o responded to that statement positively as he said that Martinez and his philosophy for the game made the move the Merseyside catchy.

"I have been very impressed by the style of play Everton adopt," he said. "I could see straight away that at this club I will have the opportunity to play football. I had the chance to speak with the manager over the last few days and we agreed that this was what we would do."

He continued: "I was impressed with his enthusiasm but also by the knowledge of football that Roberto Martinez carries his vision of football and how he reads football. I still think I can learn a great deal from him here."

Eto'o is Everton's sixth signing of the summer following Gareth Barry of Manchester City, Muhamed Besic of Ferencvaros, Romelu Lukaku of Chelsea, Brendan Galloway of MK Dons, Christian Atsu of Chelsea, on loan.
