Zara Recalls Sheriff Shirts With Print That Resembles 'The Star of David'; Spanish Retail Brand Apologizes

Zara's "sheriff" shirt for kids sparked an outrage among netizens because of its alleged resemblance to "The Star of David" and depicts the kind of clothing kids wore during the Holocaust. The Spanish retail brand has since apologized and promised to remove all "sheriff" kids shirts from store shelves.

According to CNN, the brand ran by Intidex, Zara's sheriff shirts for kids were inspired by "the sheriff's stars from the Classic Western films." But netizens were quick to point out the print, which appeared remarkably like the "Star of David."

These controversial Zara sheriff shirts were immediately recalled and the brand had issued apologies and statements about it on their Twitter account and website. The shirt was reportedly deleted from the websites as well.

"We honestly apologize," Zara said on Twitter.

Its parent company Intidex said in a statement that it has "utmost respect for all cultures and religion."

"The Group is a Company where people from 180 nationalities work together representing all the cultures, races and religions of the modern world. Intidex is proud of its cultural diversity. In addition, respect and dignity feature among the principles which guide and define its corporate values. The Group condemns and rejects any form of discrimination," the statement added.

This is not the first time Zara faced criticism over their products, according to Bloomberg. In 2007, the Spanish brand received flak for a handbag that had a swastika print.

Just recently, controversy surrounded another Zara item: a shirt with a print that said "White Is The New Black." While it may have been just a case of going with the trend, many people on social media have taken offense and claimed the item showed racial insensitivity.

Zara is owned by Intidex and has more than 5,000 stores in 86 countries spanning Europe, Asia, North America and Africa. Other brands under the Intidex company are Stradivarius, Pull & Bear and Bershka.
