'Underworld' Reboot Confirmed! Newbie Screenwriter Commissioned To Pen Script, 'I, Frankenstein' Producers Will Oversee

Good news for anti-Twilight vampire fans! Yesterday it was announced that plans to reboot the popular "Underworld" film series are underway. Lakeshore Entertainment has hired Cory Goodman to write the script while they will handle all producing matters from here.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Lakeshore Entertainment is moving forward with a reboot of the vampire action franchise, hiring Cory Goodman to write the script. Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi are producing." While a script isn't as guaranteed as production might be, it's still a step in the right direction.

Speaking of the script, Cory Goodman is a relatively new screenwriter. His current two credits are for 2011 film "Priest," starring Paul Bettany and, "the upcoming Summit film ‘The Last Witch Hunter' starring Vin Diesel, which is currently in pre-production. He's repped by WME, Aperture Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson."

Lakeshore Entertainment producers Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi are veterans however and are responsible for all the previous entries in the "Underworld" franchise.

The chances of the film getting off the ground and being successful at least internationally look good. As Cinemablend reports, "similar to Screen Gems' other major franchise, ‘Resident Evil', the ‘Underworld' movies were always far more successful internationally than there were here in the United States. While none of the films thus far have managed to break $65 million here in the States, the box office numbers balloon to triple digits when the foreign markets are accounted for.

Cinemablend is however skeptical about how soon this reboot is coming and also the choice of Goodman as the screenwriter. Here's hoping Kate Beckinsale will at least reprise her role if only because of how terribly Underworld: Rise of the Lycans did at the box office without her.

Nevertheless, vampire fantasy fans will probably have a long wait ahead before any more news generates. Until then, here's hoping Goodman writes something worthy of a million dollar production.
