Upcoming Android Phones 2014: Huawei Wins 'Sapphire Display' Race Against Apple As It Makes Ascend P7 Sapphire Edition Official

Even before the iPhone 6 gets launched, one of the upcoming Android phones for 2014 already packs its 'sapphire display'.

According to a report by GSM Arena, a Huawei executive confirmed that the Chinese manufacturer's current flagship will come with a new version, one that boasts a sapphire screen.

The company's PR team reportedly contacted the website and confirmed the announcement. In the report, the Huawei smartphone will launch in China soon, as well in other Asian markets.

Dubbed simply as the Huawei Ascend P7 Sapphire Edition, the Android-powered smartphone will pack the same specs as the original which was launched a couple of months ago. The only difference will be the screen.

In case you missed the official unveiling of Huawei's latest flagship last June, the device will pack a HiSilicon Kirin 910T chipset which is made by Huawei itself, a quad-core CPU running at 1.8GHz, Mali-450MP4 GPU, 2GB of RAM and a microSD card slot.

Also on board is a 13MP primary camera and an 8MP front cam which rivals that of Xiaomi's Mi4 which packs the same camera duo.

The Huawei Ascend P7 features a 5-inch display with Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, but that may look even better and become more durable thanks to the sapphire screen placed on the new version.

In the report, the Sapphire Edition will also support 4G LTE connectivity which should work for China Mobile as the country's largest network carrier.

Unfortunately, there were no solid details about the phone's pricing or availability. But expect the device to arrive earlier than the iPhone 6 in selected markets. The new Apple smartphone is expected to be unveiled during the company's September 9 event in the US.

Ultimately, the war will still be decided by their operating systems.
