Barclays Premier League: Alex McCarthy will wear No. 12 shirt

"When you're growing up, all you dream about is playing in the best league in the world." - Alex McCarthy

The 24 year-old has signed a four-year deal at Loftus Road and will wear the No. 12 shirt.

Queens Park Rangers have declared the signing for an undisclosed fee of goalkeeper Alex McCarthy from Reading.

Harry Redknapp, the QPR manager, was pleased to build up his options in the goalkeeping department after the departure of Julio Cesar this summer.

"He's a great young goalkeeper with a great future in front of him," Redknapp said. "He's got the potential to be a future England goalkeeper one day, so to have him here at QPR is fantastic."

"We've got Rob Green and Brian Murphy, and Alex's arrival here helps to further strengthen the goalkeeping department. I want to have competition for places in all areas of the pitch, and you can't have too much quality in your squad."

McCarthy, who will come into contention after the international break, is relishing the chance to return to the Barclays Premier League where he made several appearances with Reading.

"When you're growing up, all you dream about is playing in the best league in the world," he said. "I had a taste of it at Reading, but to be back here now is fantastic.

"I'm only 24 and I want to be playing games - there are goalkeepers out there that have sat on the bench and been forgotten about. I don't want to be one of those. It's a great challenge for me."

McCarthy is QPR's eighth summer signing and the second in the past 24 hours after Jack Robinson, the England Under-21 full-back joined from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee on a four-year deal. Robinson has been loaned to Huddersfield Town in the Championship for the season.
