‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For’ Is Summer’s Big Flop! Why Did The Sequel Fail? Here Are Some Reasons!

The sequel to "Sin City" was finally released as the last major movie of summer, but "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" became the biggest flop of the season.

Why did a sequel to a successful movie flop so bad at the box office? The cast did not lack for starpower as it boasted Eva Green, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and a lot more. There was even a small role for Lady Gaga.

There are many theories and reasons, and What Culture recently discussed some of them:

The visuals are no longer interesting. WC elaborates: "Part of the charm of the first Sin City was it's unique visual style, which incorporated a dark-and-gritty approach and a black-and-white color palette with pepperings here and there of color and over saturation. In 2005 the concept was bold, fun, and exciting. In 2014, it's old news."

Nine years is simply too long. In 2005, Jessica Alba was one of the hottest stars in Hollywood. She's still hot but in nine years she married and had two kids and hardly made a movie that shows her acting chops. Granted, she's not the main attraction here, but it simply illustrates how long the gap is.

Speaking of main attraction, the movie features Eva Green who is a very current star. Maybe too current. Eva Green IS the dame to kill for, and she gets topless while being devilishly alluring, prompting men to kill for her. Sounds very much like Eva Green in "300: Rise of An Empire" a movie that was released less than six months ago. And yes, that was a also based on a Frank Miller piece.

Blockbuster fatigue did them in. WC explains: "'Sin City: A Dame To Kill For' was the last big summer release of the year. That means that when it arrived on August 22, it came after films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The LEGO Movie, Maleficent, Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Godzilla, all of which crossed the $200 million mark at the US box office."

Yes, moviegoers can get tired, too. At that point, they needed something new and interesting to prompt them to watch one more movie-and "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" just didn't have it.
