‘The Walking Dead’ Spinoff Series Greenlit: Companion Series To Explore Zombie Apocalypse In Other Locations, Fans Hope For Los Angeles or New York

Looks like "Walking Dead" fans will get more than just a new season to be excited about. Today it was announced that AMC officially ordered a pilot for a "Walking Dead" spinoff series. Actually, it's described as more of a companion series that will explore different locations and themes in the same universe. Early reactions from fans are mainly requests that the location be in a major metropolis like Los Angeles or New York.

According to an exclusive from Entertainment Weekly, "AMC has officially ordered a pilot set in the same zombie-plagued universe as TV's top-rated drama series. The as-yet-untitled project will go into production later this year, and will be set in a different location than the original series and star a new cast of characters."

The series will keep current "The Walking Dead" executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert. It was also reported that the pilot script that impressed AMC was written by Kirkman and Dave Erickson from "Sons of Anarchy."

Screenrant predicts that the new series "could prove equally compelling" depending on how the producers utilize their freedom from the original "The Walking Dead" comic book. Fan reactions so far have been mainly ones of a request for zombies in large city.

One commenter on the Entertainment Weekly exclusive says, "NYC! Zombies and skyscrapers," sparking fifteen other replies. Other fans lobby for the West coast instead, hoping for the deserts of California and maybe even Los Angeles.

Hilariously, one fan is calling it the beginning of a "The Walking Dead" franchise with separate locations like CSI, stating "Cool! That opens us up to: TWD: Miami, TWD: NYC, TWD: Las Vegas, TWD: LA etc. Take that CSI and NCIS!!!!"

Wherever the companion series ends up, it has a good chance of getting a full order of episodes. AMC will need the ratings with the loss of "Mad Men" coming soon and the slow start of "Halt and Catch Fire." Nevertheless, "The Walking Dead" fandom can catch the Season 5 premiere on October 12th.
