‘Shadow Of The Colossus’ Movie Adaptation Gets ‘Mama’ Director: Fans Fear Adaptation Will Disappoint, Could Lead To ‘The Last Guardian’ Film?

There hasn't been quite the greatest track record for games that get adapted for the big screen. Most of the time they end up in development for years and are since long forgotten. This time though, it looks good for the "Shadow of the Colossus" film as it has just gained Andrés Muschietti to direct. Muschietti directed the horror film "Mama," so it seems he'll be able to work well with the eerie elements of the popular Playstation 2 game, yet some fans are not convinced. Most of them fear that this will be yet another disappointing adaptation, but if Muschietti can pull it off, will it lead to the long lost "The Last Guardian" movie?

According to Variety, "Sony Pictures has tapped Andrés Muschietti to direct the highly-anticipated adaptation of the video game ‘Shadow of the Colossus.'" They revealed a few other key crew including Seth Lochhead who will write the script, and Michael De Luca and Andrea Giannetti will oversee the project for the Sony.

For those unfamiliar with "Shadow of the Colossus," Screenrant summarizes the game's premise: "Shadow of the Colossus is about a young man called Wander who appeals to a mysterious and powerful entity to restore the life of a girl called Mono. The entity demands that Wander first slay sixteen colossi - enormous, ancient beings that dwell in different corners of a forbidden land - and the game is based around these sixteen battles."

Given the game's popularity, it shouldn't be surprising that fans already fear the worst happening to their beloved game. One commenter on Screenrant states, "Another crappy movie adaptation of the game is coming. I seriously don't believe in the project success." This was quickly followed by another comment: "This will never turn out good, how can 1 movie feature 16 boss fights and have any room for story? they are gonne cut those bosses down to 1-3 and leave out all the others, which is a damn shame. They should just make a ps4 hd version instead, and let people have their nostalgia unspoiled."

For those fans who think the ultimate result will be another failure, there are those with hope that this could pave the way to more video game developing companies crossing over into film with their previously released titles. One fan named Scryax on IGN commented: "I don't think everyone knows how potently great this movie could be. If this movie is good it will do well at the box office. If it makes a lot of money. Most of it will go to the owners of the I.P. (Team Ico). If that team has a lot of money, then they will resurrect The Last Guardian from Purgatory."

In the end, "Shadow of the Colossus" seems to be moving along. Hopefully, it will get through development quickly enough to get a slot in the upcoming summers that seem to be dominated by comic book films. It would definitely be something new to see in comparison.
