Obama Visits Stonehenge While Returning from NATO Summit; The President Calls Experience 'A Highlight of My Tour' [PHOTO]

This past Friday, President Obama visited Stonhenge in the English countryside on his way back home from a NATO summit in Wales. NBC News reports that Obama was called to the summit in order to discuss the threat of ISIS as well as Russian aggression in Ukraine, but that he also made time to tour the historic site in Wiltshire, England.

The Telegraph reports that the visit in Stonehenge was unscheduled, and that Obama asked his helicopter pilot to make a stop because visiting Stonehenge was one of the things on his "bucket list." His unannounced presence surprised onlookers and fellow tourists, and BBC reports that English Heritage, which manages the site, said it was "an honor" to host the President.

Upon his arrival, Obama was given a tour by curator Heather Sebire. She said, "Mr. Obama was fascinated by the story of the stones, what we know about them and the mysteries that have yet to be solved... He asked lots of questions about how old the monument is, how long it took to build it, and what was its purpose," conveying the excitement and curiosity of the President.

According to the Telegraph, Sebire went on to say, "He described the atmosphere around the stones as 'really special' and his visit to Stonehenge as 'a highlight of my tour...' It was a beautiful still evening and it was a privilege to show the US President around this unique monument which continues to inspire and intrigue people," highlighting the how special the visit was to both Obama and herself.

After his tour, Obama even stopped to chat with local families and pose for photos. BBC reports that Janice Raffle, a local living near Stonehenge, came to the site along with her family straight away when she heard the President was there. She said of the experience, "We had a brief tete a tete across the barbed wire... He was really a sweetie. He asked all our names and he was commenting on the fresh air and the beautiful countryside."
