Oscar Buzz: Stephen Hawking Biopic ‘Theory Of Everything’ Wows Critics, Eddie Redmayne And Felicity Jones To Get Best Acting Nominations?

Oscar season continues to get underway as the latest film premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival have critics continuing to make early predictions. "Theory of Everything," a Stephen Hawking biopic, is the most recent film to receive early Oscar predictions, especially for the acting performances from Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones.

According to Deadline, "In terms of Oscar watching, the most anticipated World Premiere at this year's Toronto International Film Festival debuted Sunday night and it did not disappoint. Focus Features, as expected, has a major contender in 'The Theory Of Everything,' its Stephen Hawking biopic that turns out to be a touching and unusual love story between the young Hawking and his wife Jane." They go on to describe the film as being astounding on all accounts, including the adaptation of the script by Anthony McCarten and the directing by James Marsh.

Indiewire also praises the film, particularly the lighting and cinematography. They describe Benoit Delhomme's cinematography in depth: "the interior shots of the Hawking household, the colorful array of fireworks on a starry night, the light show in Bordeaux, the surgical wintriness of the hospitals: Delhomme gives his all in every shot." One can probably expect at Oscar nomination for cinematography given this review.

Across the board, critics are amazed by Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones. The Guardian comments on the performances in question: "But Redmayne towers: this is an astonishing, genuinely visceral performance which bears comparison with Daniel Day-Lewis in ‘My Left Foot'." They add that,"Jones makes for a formidable opposite number; she's a consistently brilliant actor who needs a breakthrough."

There's still a few months to go before the race to the Dolby theater ends in December, but based on these reactions, Focus Features can expect to have a table at the Academy Awards in February. And for those of us not fortunate enough to afford the film festival circuit, "Theory of Everything" is due out in theaters on November 7th.
