Michael C. Hall Broadway News: The 'Dexter' Star Will Take Title Role in 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' Playing a Transsexual Rocker [PHOTO]

This past Monday, producers of the Tony Award-winning musical revival "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" announced that "Dexter" star Michael C. Hall will be playing the part of Hedwig, a German transsexual rock star. Hall will be taking over the lead role from Andrew Rannells, star of HBO's "Girls" and Broadway's "The Book of Mormon."

According to ABC News, this isn't the first time Hall has been on Broadway. In fact, this past spring he was one among many talented actors and actresses in the play "The Realistic Joneses." His costars were Marisa Tomei, Toni Collette, and Tracy Letts. He has also sung in musicals before; his last musical performances include stints in "Cabaret" (2000) and "Chicago" (2002).

Variety reports that "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" has recently been one of Broadway's biggest sellers. The lead role of Hedwig was originally performed by Neil Patrick Harris, who helped bring in million-dollar weeks even at seven performances a week. Rannells took over the role when Harris departed, and the weekly numbers for the show were still at a healthy $650,000 range.

Now it will be Hall's turn to perform and test his luck. Rannells finishes his role as Hedwig on October 12, leaving Hall's first show to be scheduled for October 16. He will be acting alongside Lena Hall, who won a Tony award for her role as Yitzhak in last year's performance. Playbill reports that Lena Hall has recently starred as Nicola in Broadway's Tony Award-winning musical "Kinky Boots" and is also the lead singer of rock band "The Deafening."

David Binder, the lead producer of the show, told Deadline, "Our agreement with Andrew was always for eight weeks, and I am super excited about having Michael C. Hall take over," conveying his enthusiasm for the change in actors. The New York Daily News reports that Hall will be playing the role of Hedwig at the Belasco Theater until January 4, 2015.
