Samsung Gear Solo Release Date, Price, Specs: New Smartwatch Unveiled Now Called Samsung Gear S, Capable Of Making Calls Without Cell Phone, New Designer Straps From Diesel [PHOTO]

The Samsung Gear S, previously called Samsung Gear Solo the first smartwatch capable of making calls independently has an official release date in October.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. made the announcement on August 28. "Samsung is leading this exciting and rapidly developing wearable category through progressive innovation," said JK Shin, CEO and head of IT & mobile communication at Samsung Electronics. "The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication. It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime."

Samsung's Gear S is branded as a phone within a watch because it supports both data transfer and voice calling, IB Times reports. Samsung is attempting to target outdoor and sporting enthusiasts who want to remain connected but do not want to carry a phone.

The Gear S smartwatch has a heart-rate sensor and a 300mAh Li-ion battery that will be good for two days, PC Advisor reports. It has turn-by-turn navigation that is powered by the pre-installed HERE Maps from Nokia. It also comes with a UV sensor. It is resistant to water and dust and it comes with an IP67 certification as well as S Voice.

The Samsung Gear S smartwatch will run Samsung's Tizen operating system, have 4GB internal memory, 512MB of RAM and a dual-core 1.0 GHz processor. It also has a barometer, a compass, a gyroscope as well as a built-in accelerometer.

The Gear S, also called Solo, can work independently of a smartphone and also has GPS, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 4.1 as well 2G and 3G and wireless connectivity. Its 2G connectivity is over the 900/1800MHz or 850/1900MHz frequencies while its 3G connectivity is over the 850/1900MHz or 900/2100 MHz frequencies, according to Tech Hive.

Samsung's Solo is multi-functional. Nike+Running and Samsung's S Health platforms are integrated into its system which has weather and news apps as well. It has a gallery and can also be used as a music player. The Gear S follows a rectangular design, but Samsung is also working on one with a rounded version.

Tech giants LG and Samsung have leaked key details of their upcoming wearable devices ahead of the IFA trade show in Berlin, which begins on September 5.

In other news, Diesel Black Gold has partnered with Samsung to make designer wrist straps to go with their watch, the company's description reads. "Elements of the SS 15 collection, inspired by highly stylized New Wave rock stars and tough rockabilly heroines, have been used to give a sharp attitude to the device, characterized by signature leather and metal details."

The creative director of Diesel Black Gold, Andreas Melbostad, has come up with an interpretation of the revolutionary Samsung Gear S by revealing a range of customized accessories, and all of them will debut at the runway of the brand's Spring/Summer 2015 show.
