‘The Amazing Spider Man 3’ To Focus On One Villain? ‘Sinister Six’ Used For ‘Building The Universe!’ Can Sony Still Fix The Troubled Franchise?

"The Amazing Spider Man 2" has unraveled so many problems with the franchise, but it still made money. Sony knows impending disaster when they see one, though, and there are attempts to revitalize the franchise, even if it means delaying "The Amazing Spider Man 3."

One of the biggest critiques of TASM 2 was its failed attempt to build a universe. It seemed like they lost track of the movie's original premise in order to jump on the Universe bandwagon. The result was a haphazard stitching of two films rolled into one.

Movie fansite Cinema Blend gives its own advice on what Sony needs to do before they release TASM 3. Some of their suggestions:

"Focus on one villain. The next standalone Spider-Man series needs to give complete focus and full attention to one villain, creating reasons for Peter Parker and this threat to continuously lock horns. Don't split time between numerous villains who have scattered, unfocused and/or watered-down motivations. Choose one Spider-Man villain, then give that character proper attention."

This advice was given too late for director Sam Raimi. Marc Webb still has his chance.

"Ditch the love interest. Yes, love interests were - and are - a large part of the character of Peter Parker in the comic books, but every Spider-Man movie doesn't automatically need a love interest, and I think it's time for Spidey to put his melodramatic plot twists on the shelf so we can get down to some needed action."

This is risky because it seemed like Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone is the sole redeeming factor of the movie. Then go make a romantic comedy with them. Superhero movie fans want Spidey to kick some butt.

"Abandon the Oscorp Plot. The third Amazing Spider-Man movie needs to exist on its own, contain terms. The mythology raised by Marc Webb's first two movies has been interesting to some (myself, included), but not to enough. Stop building up, for now. Strip down. Focus on one story. Your movie will be better served by that economical decision."

They wanted to change the origin stories so it all traces back to Oscorp-even the subplot about Peter Parker's dad (which they should also ditch). There were just too many holes and it also made the villains monotonous. It seems too shallow to make all of them victims of Oscorp experiments/accidents.

These are mere suggestions and Sony might not heed any of them. That would be a risk on their path since the moviegoers' interest is on a downward spiral.

It is rumored that Sony is banking heavily on Drew Goddard, director of the SInister Six movie, to build up the villains--and the universe. They are basing on his creativity with "Cabin in the Woods." That could be a good step so that Spidey can finally go back to being the character the world has embraced.
