What should we look forward to for tonight's episode and the rest of the first season from television genius Shonda Rhimes? Warning: spoilers ahead!
According to USA Today, "If there really were some "how to" on creating an entertaining TV show, more people would use it. Still, you could do worse than following the path blazed by Pete Nowalk, creator of the wild and wildly entertaining How To Get Away with Murder. And the first step is to hire a terrific actor to star - though good luck finding one as good as Viola Davis. Bringing every ounce of her considerable talent to bear in tonight's opener, Davis convincingly makes criminal lawyer/law professor Annalise Keating tough, smart, vibrant, sexy, anguished, ambitious, conniving, mature, immature and somehow, underneath it all, admirable. You then find a reliably sturdy TV premise for her to carry: dropping her into the middle of a murder mystery, giving her a case-of-the-week to battle, and surrounding her with an attractive supporting cast. Oh, and if you want to actually get the show on the air, create it for Shonda Rhimes' production company, and then watch as it joins Rhimes' own creations, Grey's Anatomy and Scandal, to fill ABC's Thursday night."

"Murder opens with four students we don't yet know carrying a dead body we don't yet see. We then flash back to the students' first day of law school in Professor Keating's class, where she sets about grilling Wes (Alfred Enoch), Connor (Jack Falahee), Michaela (Aja Naomi King) and Laurel (Karla Souza). But they're not just her students - they find out they're also auditioning for jobs with her law firm, and the first test is to come up with a defense for Keating's latest client. What follows is a Good Wife episode played at double speed, where nothing is what it seems except the obvious demand for an even greater-than-usual suspension of disbelief. Even if you don't know anything about criminal procedure, for example, it should strike you as odd that a big-time trial attorney would unquestioningly accept and introduce evidence handed to her by law students she's hardly met. We're not asking for a law-school class on the workings of the legal system, but a little common sense, just to keep us in the story, wouldn't hurt. Still, if you let them, most likely those objections will fade away in the glow of Davis' performance and the intrigue of a mystery ABC says will be solved by time the 15-episode season ends. A few minutes in, and you can sense a promise of sex, surprises, and a healthy dose of fun. And so far, the show delivers. You want a shot at a hit, that's how you do it," raves Robert Bianco of USA Today.
