The Equalizer Movie: Denzel Washington's New Film Picks Up A Massive $35 Million Across 3,234 Locations!

"The Equalizer" picked up a whopping $35 million across 3,234 locations.

The action thriller is the directorial venture of Antoine Fuqua and stars the Golden Globe award and Tony Award winner, Denzel Washington. The movie comfortably leads weekend's other new wide releases including, "The Boxtrolls" which earned $17.2 million across 3,464 locations, last week's science fiction action thriller film, directed by Wes Bail, "The Maze Runner" earned $17.5 million in its sophomore frame. After two weeks in theaters, the young adult thriller has earned $58 million.

"The Equalizer" is a violent story of a former special ops agent who goes toe to toe with the Russian mafia. The thriller appealed to both genders with 48% of the opening crowd comprising of females. Furthermore, 35% of the opening weekend crowd comprised of people under the age of 30. With a record September debut, the film picked up $3.3 million on 352 IMAX screen domestically.

"The Equalizer" reunites the team of Washington and Antoine Fuqua, the stylish curator of onscreen violence who directed Washington to an Oscar in "Training Day."

Washington's "Safe House" which earned $40.1 million and "American Gangster" which earned $43.6 million, "The Equalizer" is Washington's career's third biggest domestic opening and fourth biggest September debut of all time. With those kinds of figures, Sony is expecting "The Equalizer" to kick off an action film series targeting adult audience.

Sony Pictures president of worldwide distribution, Rory Brue said, "I'm pretty confident there will be a sequel," he further added, "from the beginning, as the story began to unfold, it had possible franchise written all over it."

The film includes Eminem's new single, "Guts Over Fear" and this further aided the formidable appeal by Washington and Fuqua. Eminem promoted the song to 95 million Facebook fans and 18.7 million Twitter followers.

In limited release, CBS films' "Pride" earned an estimated $84,791 in six locations across San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York.
