Magnet Buys Female Directed Horror Anthology Entitled 'XX', Project To Resemble ‘V/H/S’ And ‘ABCs Of Death’, 'Jennifer's Body' Director Karyn Kusama Tapped To Direct Segment

The controversy over the lack of gender equality in the film industry may have just taken a step in the right direction. Today it was announced that production studio Magnet, famous for its horror films, is going forward with another horror anthology entitled 'XX' that will have all female directors and female lead actresses.

Todd Brown of XYZ Films talked about the reasoning for the project to Deadline:

"We believe strongly in fostering the best talents around the world at XYZ. We believe different perspectives are what keep storytelling fresh and exciting and hope that XX can help to encourage more female writers and directors to explore the genre world," he said.

According to Deadline, "The XX project serves two under-represented sectors: Female-driven films, and female-driven horror films." The project is expected to be fast tracked for a 2015 release in which, Mary Harron, Jennifer Lynch, Jovanka Vuckovic, and "Jennifer's Body" director Karyn Kusama have all been contacted to direct. Dwjuan Fox is overseeing the project and Magnet will have worldwide distribution rights.

The 'XX' horror anthology comes at a good time, as it is on the heels of two successful horror anthology franchises, "V/H/S" and "ABCs of Death." Both franchises have releases this October. "ABCs of Death 2" was released on October 2nd for VOD and iTunes. "V/H/S: Viral" will also get a limited theatrical release at the beginning of November.

No announcements have been made in terms of actresses, but one could suspect that this will give newbie horror actresses a chance to get their careers off of the ground. All in all, it appears to be a step in the right direction in increasing the amount of gender equality in the film industry. Also, horror fans in particular should be excited for the chance to get yet another horror anthology franchise.
