Today, the Queen of England made Angelina Jolie an honorary dame in recognition of her campaigning against sexual violence and for her services to UK foreign policy. According to the Daily Mail, the 39-year-old actress was presented with the Insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George at a reception at Buckingham Palace.

The meeting with the Queen was private, and Jolie's recognition is part of the Diplomatic Service and Overseas Birthday 2014 Honours List. According to Today, the announcement was made back in June that Jolie was among 1,148 people who were on the Queen's birthday list for honors. At the time, Jolie stated, "Working on the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime and I am dedicated to it for all of mine."

According to Stabilisation Unit, William Hague - the Prime Minister's Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict - joined forces with Jolie to launch the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI) on May 29, 2012. The initiative aims to strengthen and support international efforts to respond to sexual violence in conflict - including by enhancing the capacity of countries, institutions, and communities to support survivors and end impunity for perpetrators.

As a special envoy for the UN Commissioner for Refugees, Jolie has attended summits on sexual violence with Hague in the past, most notably a four-day summit in London this past June.

Hague has praised Jolie, stating that she made "an enormous transformative difference" to the campaign, and that "She is very committed to this, very knowledgeable about the issues, she has come up with many of the ideas for the campaign...She and I have been working closely on this for the last two years and we will keep doing so," further conveying the significance of Jolie's assistance.

The Daily Mail reports that Jolie was accompanied to the Buckingham Palace by her husband, Brad Pitt, and her six children. They were all introduced to the Queen, but they did not have official pictures taken.
